The inception of Paliakkara Church traces back to the necessity felt by the local Christian community. As Niranam Church was relatively distant from Tiruvalla, commuting every week posed challenges. Faced with this, Christian leaders in Tiruvalla unitedly sought permission to construct a church closer to their community. However, this led to a dispute with the upper-caste Hindus of Tiruvalla, known as “Pathillathil Potties.” Undeterred, 18 Christian families swiftly erected a makeshift church with coconut leaves and bamboos, marking the humble beginnings of Paliakkara Church.

Establishment and Growth
While the exact date of the first church’s foundation remains undocumented, the permanent church was consecrated on March 20th, 1814, by Marthoma VIII. Over the years, Paliakkara Church has evolved into a significant spiritual center, fostering unity among people regardless of caste and religion. The parish currently boasts over 700 families.
Feasts and Celebrations
The main feast of St. George takes place every May (Malayalam month Medam) and spans five days. One of the highlights is a vibrant procession from St. Thomas Sehion Chapel to the Church, weaving through the streets of Thiruvalla town. Another procession follows through Thekke puthen church, Kattappuram church, and the ancient Kavil market, concluding with a feast (Nercha-vilambu) for all devotees.
